Originally from Oaxaca, Veronica has lived in Puerto Peñasco for ten years. She came to Peñasco as a teenager and lived with her sister for two years. Problems with her sister’s alcohol use, and with their relationship caused her to leave at the age of 14. She lived on her own, supporting herself until she met Andres. Andres is from Hidalgo, but came to Peñasco 13 years ago looking for better paying and more steady employment opportunities, he has been able to find work in construction. Veronica and Andres have been together for eight years. They lost their first daughter due to lack of medical attention; now they have three year old Adriana and Veronica is expecting another baby soon. Veronica’s mother lives with the family and takes care of Adriana allowing Veronica to work. She has to pay for a taxi to get to and from work, which cuts into her already low salary. The family is currently renting a room, and are making payments on their land lot. By the time they pay their rent and for their basic necessities, there is little left over, so they have been unable to build a home on their property. A house from 1MISSION will give them a place of their own where they can live comfortably and focus their limited resources on meeting their daily needs and working towards a more secure future.
